Furniture Design “Matthias Pliessnig”

With full scale fabrication in mind, I wanted to explore the potential applications of a grid shell structure at a smaller scale rather than in large pavilions or buildings. I know that this is not truly considered a grid shell because the material is altered in a steam process but I think the exploration of a grid shell system that is applied to furniture design or smaller scale fabrication could have interesting results. Like grid shells, Pliessnig’s work is composed of a grid or lattice work and derives its strength from the double curvature created. However the scale of the project and material constraints are a detriment to the application of this process at larger scales. With large scale application being the ultimate goal, I think the functionality of the grid shell systems at smaller scales is an area worth researching.
